John Mikel Obi to honour Rashidi Yekini
May 9, 2012 in Nigerian Current Affairs
The legendary Nigeria forward passed a day before Mikel played a key part in helping Chelsea land another Wembley triumph, and Mikel tells KickOffNigeria.com he was devastated to hear about Yekini’s passing.
“I don’t remember seeing him play, but as a kid growing up, I saw some of the clips from the 1994 World Cup and his name was among those that we used to hear all the time,” Mikel tells KickOffNigeria.com.
“He was one of those that I looked up to as inspiration to be a footballer, and I was devastated to hear what happened to him.
“I would like to dedicate my FA Cup medal to him, and if the manager picks me, I will also try to do something to honour him during the Champions League Final.”
Mikel’s Chelsea face Bayern Munich in UEFA’s showpiece club event, and the midfielder says irrespective of what happens after 90 minutes, he will find a way to show respect to his late countryman.
“I can’t say what I will do yet, but he deserves every honour and this is just my own little way of showing respect to him for what he did for this country.”
